This is a wonderful book on drawing by Juliette Aristides.
It covers the essential techniques to making a good drawing. These are subjects like understanding lines, contours, proportion, depth, tonal composition, light and shadow. They are the usual subjects taught for drawing. The text is insightful and filled with tips, supplemented by beautiful illustrated examples from artists and old masters.

Juliette Aristides is part of the growing return to classical beaux arts training for artists. This beautifully illustrated book includes several step-by-step exercises to help the student explore the basic elements of traditional atelier practice. She also includes an inspiring DVD with the hardcover edition. While the lessons on the DVD do not correspond directly with the book lessons, they nevertheless provide additional guidance for the topic as a whole.

Outstanding! The definitive and best book I've ever read on learning how to draw. Principled and practical as well as beautifully illustrated and well-written. Aristedes is a modern master artist. A careful study of this book is like sitting at her feet and absorbing what she's learned over many years of careful and disciplined research. She humbly and graciously wants to pass that knowledge and wisdom on to others. If you desire to learn to draw, you owe it to yourself to get this book.
This book could be, should I dare say, a great lesson in drawing without having to attend an art class! It covers everything I learned in my first semester at art school

Back to basics with the drawings. It's odd coming back after years to basics like line, form and contrast. It's also surprising how much of this basic information is internalised simply by practice. If everyone received this sort of training at the very beginning, the learning process would be speeded up. Anyhow, a beautifully produced and detailed analysis of the science of drawing, with particular assistance for students of art who may never have been taught to draw. The current sickness in ar...more

I've always wanted to learn how to draw. This was a great place to start, full of beautiful illustrations for encouragement.
Absolutely love this book. I have been doing art all my life, and Juliette Aristides makes it feel fresh, yet grounded in traditional methods. She is a wonderful, accessible writer, artist and teacher. The DVD included with this book is a huge bonus. Highly recommend.

Different from her other book in this series, this one is much more technical and useful for artists, with actual drawing methods and ideas to apply.
While I didn't see the DVD that comes along with this book, it's still an inspiring reading and I appreciate her serious approach to classical drawing and learning methods.

Juliette Aristides is brilliant in her art as well as her teaching skills. The way she brings forth the points she’s trying to make are easy to understand and clear as a bell.
In this book, Aristides highlights important topics that any beginner artist will require in their art. These are issues you are constantly faced with whenever you draw and making a good practice of them early will help you through your journey.

A lovely read! Sort of like a crash course in everything art from art history to step by step drawing instructions for difficult subjects. A lot of other books might also offer similar information, but it's the videos where it truly stands apart from other similar books. Juliette is an excellent teacher, IMHO; and she tries to actually show and explain what she's doing and why as she demonstrates the application of the concepts (yes, she herself draws a couple of figures). This book teaches classical drawing lessons that emphasize learning drawing principle before starting drawing practice. This book comes with a DVD on how to draw. I really enjoyed watching the instructor. And I learned a lot from the DVD. The book has many helpful photos and diagrams. I would categorize this as a good textbook for drawing students. If I could afford to go to Juliette Aristides classical drawing atelier in Seattle Washington I would go in a heartbeat. She is a very talented instr...more

Classical Drawing Atelier by Juliette Aristides was a wonderful book, and this book makes an excellent companion to that one. Once again, there are excellent examples and insightful text throughout. The included DVD brings to life many of the approaches touched upon within the book. I would love to see more in depth coverage of shading techniques and values - especially on the DVD - a time lapsed lesson would be invaluable, to show how the graduation of tone is laid down.
A good reference book, but...
I get annoyed when reading too many 'when I did this and that...', 'when I went to somewhere...' or 'when I studied with so-and-so'... No, I'm not a fan in those personal life stories from an art textbook.
Besides, there's not too much update or new perspective from the author's other book on Classical Drawing Atelier. The DVD seems a bit redundant but at the same time not informative enough.

An excellent book on drawing for someone with a rudimentary knowledge of drawing and some experience. A beginner might be a bit confused, but it still works well for an absolute beginner if this was the only book they were going to read on drawing. The video goes well with it, and I took copious notes from this book for my own class room.

Ateliers have produced the greatest artists of all time—and now that educational model is experiencing a renaissance. These studios, a return to classical art training, are based on the nineteenth-century model of teaching artists by pairing them with a master artist over a period of years. Students begin by copying masterworks, then gradually progress to painting as their...more

A pleasant introduction to the traditional training in art that has been revived in the private studios and ateliers in Europe and North America. Unfortunately, for the beginner, aside from the beautiful illustration, very little is actually said that is meaningful. This, I think, is because of the language used, which is very particular. The atelier system of classical training, as the author says, has long suffered decline because of the predominant and common attitude of the art schools to tr...more
Beautiful pictures accompany concepts in words, not a practical book with step-by-step illustrations.
Though, the information in the book is useful for those already have had basic skills on drawing. I would like those who still at the door of the realm of drawing to pick up other books like Keys to Drawing or How to Draw What You See, The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is good too. And if you already draw well, have a passion on the subject also, pick up the book, and you will find s...more

I've been reading many, many books about drawing, and coming to the conclusion that the atelier system that Aristides promotes in this book (she is the founder of one herself) is THE way to learn classical academic drawing techniques. For those who can't get to an atelier, or can't give up their lives to go work at one for a few years, this is an introduction to the concepts taught. I was hoping for more practical exercises, or suggestions for further instruction to self-teach, but her point is...more

The author explains important aspects of drawing in the classical sense: idea, line, value, and form. There is a discipline to learning to draw well. And if one would ever aspire to be a good painter they must first learn to draw excellently. Filled with beautiful images and text this is a wonderful introduction to the practice. I highly recommend it.
This book is breathtaking.
(Okay, I might be a little biased since I helped a bit with the editing-but marvelously done Juliette!)

Wonderful introduction to the atelier system. The art history and design discussions were fascinating and the artwork -- from both historic and contemporary artists -- was a joy to examine.
Excellent book with beautiful pictures, very useful for my figure class!

I was disappointed to see it was a book about art and artists and drawing, and not a book inviting the reader to draw himself. Although highly professional, it is also arrogant.
Another weak point was the repeating on the same points various of times.
But the strong parts of this book is the way it gives you the ability to see art in a new and more deeper way, and the last chapter is what I was actually looking for, specific lessons and techniques.

Juliette Aristides is a strong proponent for the renaissance of traditional atelier training for artists. This book gives an excellent overview of the techniques, practices, and themes of classical atelier art training which began to die out at the end of the 19th century.

This is an excellent overview of the world of Atelier's. The author presents all of the relevant material related to the concept of studying in this manner. There are many wonderful examples of artwork throughout, including many fine pieces by the author. I would have liked to see more 'step by step instruction', but the included information was a solid foundation for anyone interested in the Atelier experience.
Was a very informative book on Art subjects, deserves a rating of 4/5... It first begins by the principles of the atelier, the first 'real' Part touches on design, line, value and form, The second focuses on most important drawing subjects, the figure, the cast, so on, The only reason it gets a four is that it offers too little practical exercises, I would have loved to see just some instruction on how to actually use the medium of charcoal.

This book is quite okay. they have some good tips. When you read this book you find that you read more in dept about the classical techniques and period. The way they translated there views into the art they represented at that time. For example da Vinci, Michelangelo etc. There are two books in the serie.
I expected more from this book. Mostly it is wisdom like advise for this atelier method, which has a quite dubious philosophy. Also there everything is very high level. This could be a good thing, but it is also very shallow. I was asking myself: Where is the beaf? And I am vegetarian.
The best artbook I've ever read. 'nuff said.
A very good book for beginner who wants to understand how the art education running now and then.
