When DayZ first hit the gaming scene, there was a ton of hype about its promise, but playing it required buying a combat simulator that very few people would actually want. Thankfully, Minecraft DayZ looks to change that, taking all the features that make DayZ so incredible and porting them over to Minecraft, allowing more people to have the amazing experience that is DayZ without having to buy a new and utterly alien game.

A zombie outbreak has happened for some unknown reason, and now you and your friends need to try and survive for as long as you can. You might be saying – well there are already zombies in Minecraft! You’d be right, but what the DayZ mod does is add all of the survival mechanics that DayZ is so well known for, such as:

• Bleeding
• Broken Limbs
• Hunger

How exactly do these things work in Minecraft, though? To tell the truth, not all that differently from how they function in DayZ. When you are bleeding, you need to use a bandage to heal yourself up, and you always have to find food to keep your hunger up, which works pretty similarly to the built-in Minecraft hunger mechanic with some very slight changes.

Modernized Minecraft

The DayZ mod also adds somewhat of a modern bent to Minecraft, adding guns, body armor, and the like. At the end of the day, it always seems like this mod is trying to be DayZ far more than it is trying to be Minecraft, for better or for worse. Indeed, the DayZ mod for Minecraft makes a huge change that most mods would never even dare making to Minecraft – you can’t modify the world. Everything is found in the world that you need, but not being able to build your own shelter feels really weird in Minecraft.

No matter how it might feel though, this mod is a perfectly passable version of DayZ, and one of the better unofficial mods that I’ve seen – but the fact that it’s simply a version of DayZ, not a version of Minecraft that might turn some people off. That said, everyone should at least give it a try.
